Bismarck, ND is one of the fastest growing areas in North Dakota, as well as its media. The Arbitron radio research firm ranks the market #286, with over 250,000 residents. The Minot-Bismarck-Dickinson (Williston) market consists of a cluster of smaller cities in Central North Dakota, including; Minot, Dickinson, Mandan, Beaulah, Harvey, Linton, and Willinston. Bismarck ranks the 5th highest in the U.S. in terms of radio advertising revenues per dollar of retail sales, a key indicator of radio's relative attractiveness to advertisers. The market is served by a handful of TV stations (DMA# 158), including all major network affiliations, NBC KFYR-TV 5, CBS KXMB-TV 12, ABC KBMY TV 17, FOX on KNDX TV 24/26, and PBS outlet KBME-TV 3. The major newspaper for the region is the Bismarck Tribune. The radio market is spread over a large area of Central, and Western North Dakota, and has generated record breaking revenues in the past 10 years. The major radio companies in the area include Clear Channel Communications, and Cumulus Broadcasting, Inc. Due to the rural, and demographic breakdown of the market, Country and Rock are the most popular formats. Bismarck is the state capital of North Dakota, and hub for all industry for the region. National companies include Burlington Northern Railroad, Dakota Gasification Plant, Melroe Manufacturing and a division of Amoco Oil/British Petroleum.
